The Book of the Acts: The Divine Record of the First Thirty Years of Christianity
The book of the Acts is a divinely inspired record of the first 30 years of Christianity. It takes up the historical narrative where the four Gospels leave off (at the ascension of the Lord) and continues it from the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost to Paul’s captivity in Rome, some 30 years later. Being supplementary to the Gospels and introductory to the Epistles, the book of the Acts documents the transition from Judaism to Christianity. As we turn the pages of the book, we see the Lord leading His Jewish saints out of the bondage of that legal system into the glorious liberty of Christianity, one step at a time. This transition is not something that the apostles invented after the Lord died (as some Jewish detractors say), but something that He taught His disciples when He was still on earth. In John 10, the Lord said that He was going to lead His “sheep” (Jewish believers) out of the “fold” of Judaism into a new thing which He called a “flock,” where “other sheep” (Gentile believers) would be added (John 10:1-16). We see this fulfilled in the book of the Acts. Besides documenting the transition from Judaism to Christianity, the book also illustrates many Christian principles taught in the epistles in real-life situations.

“And if thou wilt walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days” (1 Kings 3:14).

We noticed yesterday that when the Lord asked Solomon what he wanted, he asked for wisdom to rule well. As a reward to Solomon for asking for this, the Lord promised him riches and honor as well. However, we see by our verse for today that He promised him something else, but there was a condition attached. If Solomon walked in obedience, the Lord would lengthen his days. That is, he could count on a long life. This was one of the blessings promised in the Old Testament, for obedience.

Did Solomon live a long life? Was he obedient to the Lord? It seems that he lived for the Lord during the first half of his reign, but later, as we will see tomorrow, he married many foreign women who turned his heart away from the Lord.

We saw yesterday that Solomon was probably not yet twenty years old when he became king. He reigned forty years, so that he died when he was not even sixty. David lived to be seventy, but sadly, Solomon’s days were not lengthened, because of his disobedience.

Growing in Grace
“Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed” (Hebrews 12:12-13).
Yesterday we spoke about roots, and how the redwood trees have roots that are intertwined with each other, so that they help to support one another. Today we are told to “lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and to “make straight paths” for our feet, “lest that which is lame be turned out of the way.”
We all have an influence on others, whether we realize it or not. The Bible tells us that “none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself” (Romans 14:7). Our influence on others can be either good or bad. If we are discouraged, we tend to discourage others. If someone else is lame in a spiritual way, we can either help him get healed, or we can discourage him further and be the means by which he misses the right path.
Perhaps we say, “But I am going through difficulties myself!” Then let us do what these verses tell us to do. We must recognize that the difficulties in our lives are allowed of the Lord to teach us something. Then, instead of getting discouraged, we are to stop thinking about ourselves, and start making straight paths for our feet. It is never right to feel sorry for ourselves. Rather, we are to look to the Lord for His help, and then be an encouragement to others.

The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.1 – Christ … hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.2 – The way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing.3
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.4

Comfort of the Scriptures
“Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thess. 5:22).
If the believer is to please and honor his Lord, there are not only certain things which he must pursue and follow by the grace of God, but there are also certain things which he must refuse and deny. We are called to “ever follow that which is good,” and to “follow after the things that make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” We need to “seek peace, and pursue it.” But the grace of God is also constantly “teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” And rather than be ensnared by “the love of money,” we instead ought to “flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” We who know the Lord are responsible to refuse and deny sin in our lives and associations. “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” For needed power to do this, “put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.” “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”
If we would live for Christ’s glory,
And walk with Him in the way,
We must deny all sin’s wooings,
Taking grace from Him each day.
