 The connection of "prophecy" as well as of the "laying on of hands" is well illustrated by Acts 13:2, 3, where the Spirit designated Barnabas and Saul for the special mission to which they were separated (On 1 Timothy 4:6-16 by W. Kelly)
 God had pointed him out to this end by prophecy; and this immediate testimony from God, to which the operation of His power was united, had been accompanied by the seal of testimony from man, that is, that of the elders among the Christians (compare Acts 13:1-3). (1 Timothy 4 by J.N. Darby)
 The gift had been given by prophecy, and by the laying on of Paul's hands (2 Tim. 1:6). It had not been given by the laying on of the elders' hands: they laid their hands on Timothy as expressing their fellowship with him. There is a difference in the expression the Spirit of God employs, which shows that the communication of the gift (through prophecy) depended for effective agency not in any way on the elders but only the apostle. The particle of association (meta) appears where the presbytery are spoken of, that of instrumental means (dia) where the apostle speaks of himself. This distinction is not groundless. In {vi 27447}{/vi}, (met autōn), means "in connection with them," not "by them," like (di autōn) in verse 12.

There is slight support of the strange reading "the elder."
