15. All That We Were--Our Sins, Our Guilt

C.M.
by H. Bonar, 1845
1
All that we were — our sins, our guilt,

Our death — was all our own:

All that we are we owe to Thee,

Thou God of grace, alone.
“Of sin, because they believe not on me.” (John 16:9)
“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” (James 2:10)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10)
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” (1 Peter 5:10)
2
Thy mercy found us in our sins,

And gave us to believe;

Then, in believing, peace we found;

And in Thy Christ we live.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us. Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2:4-5)
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” (Titus 3:5)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

All that we are as saints on earth,

All that we hope to be

When Jesus comes and glory dawns,

We owe it all to Thee.
