257. Himself He Could Not Save

6,6,6,6,8,8.
by A. Midlane
1
Himself He could not save,

He on the cross must die,

Or mercy cannot come

To ruined sinners nigh;

Yes, Christ, the Son of God, must bleed,

That sinners might from sin be freed.
“He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.” (Matthew 27:42)
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up.” (John 3:14)
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
“Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” (Luke 24:7)
“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.” (Luke 24:44-46)
“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” (Romans 6:18)
2
Himself He could not save,

For justice must be done;

Our sin’s full weight must fall

Upon the sinless One;

For nothing less can God accept

In payment of that fearful debt.
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” (Romans 3:24-26)
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
3
Himself He could not save,

For He the Surety stood

For all who now rely

Upon His precious blood;

He bore the penalty of guilt

When on the cross His blood was spilt.
“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.” (Hebrews 7:22)
“But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:19)
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
“Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?” (John 18:34)
4
Himself He could not save,

Love’s stream too deeply flowed,

In love Himself He gave,

To pay the debt we owed.

Obedience to His Father’s will,

And love to Him did all fulfill.
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42)
“But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.” (John 14:31)
5
And now exalted high —

A Prince and Savior He,

That sinners might draw nigh

And drink of mercy free,

Of mercy now so richly shed,

For Jesus liveth who was dead.
“Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.” (Acts 2:33)
“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.” (Acts 5:31)
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us.” (Ephesians 2:4)
“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” (Revelation 1:18)
