His lamp am I,

To shine where He shall say;

And lamps are not for sunny rooms,

Nor for the light of day;

But for the dark places of the earth

Where shame and wrong and crime have birth,

Or for the murky twilight gray

Where wandering sheep have gone astray,

Or where the lamp of faith grows dim

And souls are groping after Him.

And as sometimes a flame we find,

Clear-shining, through the night

So dark we cannot see the lamp—

But only see the light—

So may I shine, His love the flame,

That men may glorify His name.

Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932) wrote from her own painful and joyful experience with God. She was deprived of both of her parents in her youth and had hardly attained adulthood before she was so severely afflicted with arthritis that she could no longer earn a living or even live without help. Having trusted Christ in her youth, she turned to the Lord in her affliction and began expressing her soul in poetry. She soon found that others appreciated her poetry as well, and the publication of her poems earned her much respect and many friends in her lifetime. Other popular poems by Annie are: “A Very Present Help”

“He Giveth More Grace”

“One Day at a Time”

“What God Hath Promised”

“When Thou Passest Through the Waters”
