39*. How Can We Sink With Such a Prop

C.M.
by I. Watts
1
How can we sink with such a prop,

As the eternal God,

Who bears the earth’s huge pillars up

And spread the heavens abroad?
“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” (Deuteronomy 33:27)
“The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.” (Psalm 75:3)
“Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.” (Isaiah 42:5)
“Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.” (Isaiah 44:24)

How can we die if Jesus lives,

As risen from the dead,

Since life and grace our souls receive

In our exalted Head?
“Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.” (John 14:19)
“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” (1 Corinthians 15:20)
“But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” (2 Timothy 1:10)
“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” (Philippians 2:9)
3
All that we are, and all we have,

Shall be forever Thine;

And all a cheerful heart could give,

Our willing hands resign.
4
And could we yet make some reserve,

And duty did not call,

We love Thee, Lord, with such a love,

That we would give Thee all.
