About This Product

"That ye sorrow not, even as others, which have no hope." A message of comfort related to the deaths of two children.

Full Text of This Product

Some years ago, we experienced the death of our six-year old son, when, while on his bicycle, he collided with a car. He lived only a few hours after the collision. As we were leaving the hospital that evening, I said to my wife, “We have just experienced what most parents most dread, and I don’t feel as I would have expected to feel. I feel very supported.” She agreed with me.

True, there were friends who met us at the hospital who wept and prayed and waited with us, and we are grateful that we were so well supported in that way; but our sense of support was deeper than that. We experienced this truth stated in God’s Word: “The Eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27.

Recently, when we experienced the death of our infant granddaughter, we felt the same wonderful support; and it caused us to thank God again for His support and comfort, and also to remember that there are many who know little of it. It is because we are aware that there are many who have not enjoyed the same wonderful support which we have enjoyed that I write this little article. We may not be able to share your grief, but you can share our comfort.

For Joey’s memorial service, we prepared the following four-page memorial folder. Please carefully consider what is written there:

Eternity: With Christ

“Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honor and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.”

* * * * *

“There is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”

“When we were without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

We “sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [precede] them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 Thess. 4:13-16 1 Cor. 15:55-57

Salvation is a big word,

But I am not too small

To know Christ died on Calvary,

From sin to save us all.

For when a sinner trusts Him

To save him from his sin,

The Saviour comes with peace and joy

To dwell his heart within.

Salvation! Salvation!

The gift of God is free;

For Jesus died for sinners,

Even you and me.

The Bible clearly tells us

That all are lost in sin;

That not by any goodness

Can we salvation win.

If I could have but one verse, John three sixteen would do:

God loved the world and gave His Son

To die for me and you.

Salvation is forever,

The Word of God is plain;

A sheep found by the Shepherd

Cannot be lost again!

For "they shall never perish,"

None plucks them from His hand;

Though they are only happy when

They follow His command.

At Joey’s memorial service, besides singing the above song, which was on the back of the memorial folder, we also sang Joey’s favorite song:

Around the throne of God in heaven

Will many children sing;

Children whose sins are all forgiven,

Will heavenly anthems bring,

Singing, "Glory, glory, glory be to God on high!"

What brings them to that world above,

That heaven so bright and fair,

Where all is peace, and joy, and love?

How came those children there?

Singing, "Glory, glory, glory be to God on high!"

Because the Saviour shed His blood

To wash away their sin;

Now washed in that most precious flood,

Behold them white and clean!

Singing, "Glory, glory, glory be to God on high!"

On earth they sought the Saviour's grace,

On earth they loved His name;

So then they'll see His blessed face,

And praise before the Lamb:

Singing, "Glory, glory, glory be to God on high!"

Only a few days earlier, when Olive was putting Joey to bed, he had said, “Mommy, I would like to go to live with Jesus right now.” It was a real comfort to us to know that Joey was ready to go. Over a year earlier, he had confessed the Lord Jesus and had trusted Him as Savior; and there had been real a change in his life as well. Dear reader, is your child ready for heaven? Are you?

As for our infant granddaughter, Zoey Hope, was well named. “Zoe” means “life,” and she lives with Jesus as well, redeemed by Him who said, “Suffer [allow] little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:14. God had something better for Zoey than a full and flawed life in this world.

It may be that what has been written here may be viewed as mere pious platitudes; but they are eternal truths nonetheless. God is not shaken by our doubts, feelings, opinions or views. “He . . . spared not His own Son.” Romans 8:32. We may rest in His love, power, and wisdom.

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

Please share our comfort.
