197. O God! What Cords of Love Are Thine

by Doddridge
O God! what cords of love are Thine,
How gentle, yet how strong!
Thy truth and grace their strength combine
To draw our souls along.
Hosea 11:4; Song of Solomon 8:6-7; Ecclesiastes 4:12; John 1:14; Jeremiah 31:3; Song of Solomon 1:4
The guilt of twice ten thousand sins
One moment takes away;
And when the fight of faith begins,
Our strength is as our day.
1 Timothy 6:12; Deuteronomy 33:25
Comfort, through all this vale of tears,
In blest profusion flows;
And glory of unnumbered years
Eternity bestows.
Psalm 126:5-6; Psalm 84:6; Isaiah 51:12; 2 Corinthians 1:3
Drawn by such cords we'll onward move,
Till round the throne we meet,
And, captives in the chains of love,
Embrace our Saviour's feet.
“I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.” (Hosea 11:4)
