“Peace, peace [perfect peace] to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD. … There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” Isaiah 57:19 & 21.

Peace with God is a priceless blessing. Peace without God is a delusion of Satan. Our Lord Jesus Christ believed in Satan’s existence and activity, and He spoke of it in this way: “When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace.” Luke 11:21.

False Peace

Satan is the “strong man,” the world is his “palace,” and you, if you are not one of God’s children, are among his “goods,” and the phrase “in peace” describes your condition if you have never yet been awakened by the Spirit of God to see your lost position as a sinner guilty before God. Forgetful of the sins of your past, heedless of the calls of the gospel to repent and to turn to God in the present, and oblivious to the certainty of eternal judgment in the future, you have been carelessly and apparently peacefully passing through life.

No fear of God is before your eyes by day, as you do your own will and take your own pleasure. No conscience pangs disturb you at night. Unawakened, unblessed, un-saved, unconverted, the slave of sin, you proceed “in peace,” and Satan will do his best to prevent that peace being disturbed.

But do not forget that this peace is false. It is founded in sin, and fostered by the devil. It finds its sphere in the world and has no link with God. I would not have your kind of peace for ten thousand worlds!

True Peace

Peace with God, by contrast, is true, because it is divine in its nature and source. It blessedly belongs to every believer in Jesus, and every believer in Jesus belongs to it. The reason is simple. On the cross, Jesus, our blessed substitute, bore all the judgment of God against our sins. He “who knew no sin” was made to be sin for us who believe. God’s claims were all met in righteousness. The result is described in this way: “Having made peace through the blood of His cross.” Colossians 1:20. “The God of peace … brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.” (Hebrews 13:20).

When the Lord Jesus Christ first met with his disciples after his resurrection, His first statement was, “Peace be unto you.” John 20:19. Now that He has ascended to the right hand of God, it is positively declared that “He is our peace.” Ephesians 2:14. God’s Word is now “preaching peace by Jesus Christ,” and the believer can say confidently and truthfully, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1.

Do you have God’s peace? Are you still uncertain and wanting to have God’s peace? Your wish, and mine for you, as well as the way these wishes are to be fulfilled, is given in the following sweet words of the Apostle Paul: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:13. Notice the way that peace is enjoyed—just “believing.”

“Acquaint now thyself with Him and be at peace.” Job 22:21.
