33*. Rest My Soul, the Work Is Done

7s.
by M. Bowley
1
Rest my soul, the work is done,

Done by God’s almighty Son;

This to faith is now so clear,

There’s no place for torturing fear.
“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” (John 17:4)
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)
“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)
2
Not through works of weary toil,

Comes the sunshine of God’s smile;

Won by Christ, if found in Him,

Brightly falls the glorious beam.
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” (Titus 3:5)
“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.” (Philippians 3:9)
3
With belief in Jesus blest,

We are entering into rest;

He who full salvation brought,

In us all our works hath wrought.
“Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” (Hebrews 4:11)
4
Come, my soul, take up the cross,

Count the gain, despise the loss;

Labor for and with the Lord

Brings exceeding great reward.
5
Free from every fear of wrath,

Choose the laborer’s happy path,

Tread the way which Christ hath trod,

Till the sabbath of thy God.
