"Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they CALL on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they BELIEVE in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they HEAR without a preacher? and how shall they PREACH, except they be sent? as it is written, How BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THEM THAT PREACH THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, AND BRING GLAD. TIDINGS OF GOOD THINGS: (but they have not all obeyed the gospel, for Esaias saith, Lord, who bath believed our report?) So then FAITH COMETH BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD.”
N.B. "THE WORD OF GOD" in this passage is not "the gospel of peace" preached by Paul and the others, but God's COMMAND, to them, to go forth and preach to the Gentiles—" FAITH COMETH BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD"—That is, the Gentiles believe, because they hear the truth from the lips of an apostle—they hear, because of "the word of God„" namely, His previous command to the apostle to preach.
GOD’S CALL TO THE GENTILES RESULTING IN THE GENTILES CALLING ON GOD.
1.—Paul and others sent to the Gentiles
2.—Paul and others preach to the Gentiles.
3.—The Gentiles hear.
4.—The Gentiles believe.
"Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Rom 10:1313For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13))
5.—The Gentiles call.
" WHILE I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; and saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem; for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee; and when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. And he said unto me, DEPART: FOR I WILL SEND THEE FAR HENCE UNTO THE GENTILES." (Acts 22:17-2117And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; 18And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. 19And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: 20And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. 21And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. (Acts 22:17‑21).)
Here it was that "the word of God"—the commission came to Paul which has occasioned the Gentiles to hear, to believe, to call upon Him to whom the apostle bore witness.
