160. Though Troubles Assail

Though troubles assail,

And dangers affright,

Though friends should all fail,

And foes all unite:

Yet one thing secures us

Whatever betide,

The Scripture assures us

The Lord will provide.
“And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.” (Genesis 22:8)
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” (Genesis 22:14)
“But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.” (Luke 8:23-24)
“<<To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.>> Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.” (Psalm 12:1)
“It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” (Hebrews 13:5-6)

The birds, without barn

Or storehouse, are fed;

From them let us learn

To trust for our bread:

His saints what is fitting

Shall ne’er be denied,

So long as ’tis written,

The Lord will provide.
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:26)
“Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11)
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

We may, like the ships,

By tempests be tossed

On perilous deeps,

But cannot be lost;

Though Satan enrages

The wind and the tide,

The promise engages

The Lord will provide.
“And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.” (Matthew 8:24-25)
“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.” (Psalm 107:29)
“The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.” (Psalm 93:3-4)

His call we obey,

Like Abram of old,

Not knowing our way,

But faith makes us bold;

For though we are strangers,

We have a sure guide,

And trust in all dangers

The Lord will provide.
“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” (Hebrews 11:8)
“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” (1 Peter 2:11)
“For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.” (Psalm 48:14)
“<<To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.>> Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.” (Psalm 12:1)
