Two Men (Luke 18:10-14) “Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican” (Luke 18:10). The Pharisee prayed: From a position of self-promotion: “stood and prayed thus with himself” (Verse 11). With a self-centered motive: “God, I thank Thee, that I am not as other men are … ” (Verse 11). In a self-righteous manner: “ … or even as this publican” (Verse 11). Being totally self-absorbed: “I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess” (Verse 12). The publican prayed: From a position of self-denial: “Standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven” (Verse 13). In the spirit of self-contrition: “ … but smote upon his breast” (Verse 13). With true repentance: “Saying, God be merciful to me a sinner” (Verse 13). The Lord said of the publican: “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other” (Verse 14). Which one are you?
