Ransom Money

“Christ Jesus…gave Himself a ransom for all”
(1 Timothy 2:5-6).

In olden times large sums of money were paid to ransom those taken in battle. Richard I, of England, was ransomed for 100,000 pounds; David Bruce of Scotland for 100,000 marks; and King John of France for 500,000 pounds. But these immense sums of money were nothing compared to the price of the ransom paid to redeem the sinner. “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

A missionary in Africa once wrote:

I have lived for four years alone in Africa, have been thirty times stricken with fever, have been attacked by rhinos and lions, have been ambushed by natives, have eaten everything from ants to rhinoceros, but I would gladly go through the same experience again for the joy of teaching these people to know the Saviour who gave His life a ransom for them.

David Livingstone

His own Testimony:

“People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can it be called a sacrifice which is simply paid back as a small part of the great debt owing to our God, which we can never repay? Is that a sacrifice which brings its own reward of healthful activity, the consciousness of doing good, peace of mind, and a bright hope of a glorious destiny hearafter? Away with such a word, such a view, and such a thought! It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather, it is a privilege. Anxiety, sickness, suffering or danger now and then, with the foregoing of the common conveniences and charities of this life, may make us pause and cause the spirit to wave and sink; but let this only be for a moment. All these are nothing when compared with the glory which shall be revealed in and for us. I never made a sacrifice. Of this we ought not to talk when we remember the great sacrifice which He made who left His Father’s throne on high to give Himself for us.”

“We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do” (Luke 17:10).

Sacrifice

In the materialistic society in which many of us live and operate from day to day to day we know very little about making real sacrifices. We are taught that true happiness is achieved by living for ourselves and getting what we want in the accumulation of temporal things. We hear phrases like, “I wanted it and I’m going to get it.” Or, “I certainly deserve it.” Or, “It’s my right to have it.”

Here are some Scriptures in connection with making sacrifices in our daily life:

“By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15).

“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

What sacrifice will you make for the Lord today?

Dear Young Christian:

For many of you, school has either started again or will start very shortly. As studies begin once more it is good to keep in mind the verses that tell us, “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), and also, “Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Yes, even our studies should be done “heartily” to the best of our ability, and for the Lord’s honor and glory. This renders a good testimony as a believer.

On the other hand, we want to be careful not to let our school work so overwhelm us that we have no time for the Lord. Solomon said, “Of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecclesiastes 12:12). But there is one study that we never want to let up on or grow weary of. Paul said to Timothy, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). It takes constant diligence to live for the Lord and grow in our spiritual understanding.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

His Presence

How much does being in the presence of the Lord mean to you at the beginning of another week. In the Psalms we often read of the desire of the writer to be in the presence of the Lord, not only individually but collectively as well, and the blessing that results from it. Here are four examples:

“In Thy presence is fulness of joy” (Psalm 16:11).

“Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving” (Psalm 95:2).

“Come before His presence with singing”
(Psalm 100:2).

“The upright shall dwell in Thy presence”
(Psalm 140:13).

The Lord Jesus has invited us to His table today in fellowship with fellow-believers. The promise is, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). He will not fail in His promise, the question is will you fail in your response to the invitation. If you do, not only will you be the loser, but the Lord will miss out on the joy of having you in His presence.

Recall

In 2010, auto manufacturer recalled a staggering 20 million cars in the United States for various reasons. Just the thought of that many defective cars on the road is startling enough. Yet, what is even more disturbing is the indifference of some owners. In one instance the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety warned, “It’s a free repair! Get it done! It may save your life!” In spite of such warnings, statistics indicated that many never responded.

We shake our heads at such folly, and yet there are many who are refusing to respond to the Lord’s call to repentance. The Lord began his preaching in Mark’s gospel by saying, “Repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

We are all born with the defect of sin. Unlike the automobiles, the moral defect of mankind is not the Maker’s fault. He made everything, “very good” (Genesis 1:31). But there is a remedy, and that remedy is through the work of the cross. Don’t ignore the Lord’s call. The free and permanent remedy offered today for your spiritual defect will save your life eternally. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you” (Ezekiel 39:26).

The World

I have known some young people who have more or less said to me, “We must get into the world and experience it in order to know what it is like and to grow stronger in the Lord.”

This kind of thinking is wrong and very detrimental to our spiritual growth and personal testimony. It is true that we are in the world, but the Lord Jesus prayed, “I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil” (John 17:15). We are also told, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this…to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 17:15). There is certainly no instruction in the Bible to go out and indulge in worldliness just so we have the experience. You will never be able to justify such a course.

However, there is a divine pattern set out for us at the beginning of the Book of Psalms. “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2).

Temptation

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

God gave us the gift of our minds, and our bodies, as well as the ability to love. Scripture never promises that avoiding temptation would be easy, only worthwhile. Keeping our hearts and lives pure may be a struggle, but with God’s help it is possible. Few decisions are as important to your future happiness as this one regarding purity.

Paul as an older brother in the Lord, exhorted a younger brother by the name of Timothy, “Keep thyself pure” (1 Timothy 5:22). We need to let these three words echo in our ears and conscience every moment of every day. The minute we let our guard down Satan is right there with another temptation. In a world where evil is so accessible we need to be doubly careful. Paul also had a prayer for the Christians in Thessalonica: “The very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

Prayer

Hannah prayed in the temple:

“And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:10).

Nehemiah prayed in the presence of the king:

“So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king” (Nehemiah 2:4).

Hezekiah prayed on his sick bed:

“Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord” (Isaiah 38:2).

Daniel prayed in his room:

“He went into his house…and prayed” (Daniel 6:10).

The Lord prayed on the mountain top:

“He went up into a mountain apart to pray” (Matthew 14:23).

Peter prayed on the roof top:

“Peter went up upon the housetop to pray” (Acts 10:9).

Paul and Silas prayed in prison:

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed” (Acts 16:25).

WHERE WILL YOU PRAY TODAY?

Love the Lord

“I love the Lord” (Psalm 116:1).

Do you love the Lord?
Do you love Him more,
Than you did the day before?
Do you love Him today,
More than yesterday?

Do your love the Lord?
Is the world your love,
Or the Lord above?
Has His love for you,
Touched your heart anew?

Do you love the Lord?
With affection true
The Lord loves me and you!
Enjoy His love and peace,
And your love will increase.
