In the beginning of this chapter, God looks for practical holiness in His people. Although we are “clean every whit” (John 13:10), we are still to purify ourselves as He is pure. Inasmuch as such promises have been made to us, is He not worthy of purity in our lives? The great Apostle Paul needed encouragement too, for when he came to Macedonia he was cast down, had fears and then was comforted. Within and without, he was passing through trying circumstances. Have you ever been in a similar situation? The Lord knows how to encourage at such times. Titus told Paul that the Corinthians had sorrow and repented of their bad behavior before the Lord. What joy this news brought to the Apostle’s heart. He really loved them, and his care and concern caused him to write the first epistle. Titus also was comforted when he saw the effect that Paul’s letter had on the Corinthians. Their fear and trembling was evidence that God was already working in their souls.
