Luke 22:4. He went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
These “captains” were not Roman military officers, but the Levitical officers who had charge of the temple watch. The “captain of the temple,” mentioned in Acts 4:1; 5:26, was probably the chief officer of the whole guard of the temple.
