“Dear Sir, — I wish to thank you for the New Testament I received quite safely today, and it would do your eyes good, sir, to see the rush the fellows made when I said, ‘Who would like one?’ And they asked me if I would be good enough to write you for a small parcel of books. There are an enormous lot of fellows here without Testaments, and I am sure they would all be grateful if you would send me a small parcel of them. Some of our sergeants use very bad language, and I said to one of them, ‘There is only one Person I am afraid of and that is God,’ and he stopped swearing at once, and you could see the change come over him. I showed him my Testament, and he said, ‘Will you get me one?’ We have formed a little party on our own for prayers at night, and there are a lot more fellows waiting to join, so if you will send me a small parcel I shall be very thankful. — I remain your friend, Pte. L. T —.
