A Message From God: 1917
TO look at, Private Davies appeared a “hard nut to crack.” When asked if he would like one of the Testaments, he said, “No, they don’t interest me.” Pressed for his reason, he stated that much of the Testament was untrue, manifesting that he had taken in the poison of infidelity. As the conversation proceeded it was apparent that he needed very plain and faithful dealing, so, opening the Testament, he was shown
John 3:18,
18
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:18)
and his condition as “condemned already” was pointed out. Further portions that revealed the true state of his soul were turned to. He found gradually that the Word of God could not be easily put aside, and that night he became seriously awakened. But, as is so often the case, it was some little time before he acknowledged it. Shortly after this conversation he attended a gospel meeting held in the hut, left after the meeting ended, but returned and said, “
I should be glad if you men would pray for me
.” We knelt around that anxious one, and soon there came from him a deep confession of sin. “
O God, I am a sinner, a very miserable sinner
.” While on his knees he was led to trust in the Lord Jesus, and his life after was a clear testimony to the fact that he had become “a new creature.”
