Many years before the Lord Jesus came down to this world, God gave the children of Israel some commandments and laws, which told them what they should do, and what they should not do. When any one sinned and broke these commandments, he had to offer a sacrifice for his sin.
A lamb or some other creature was killed and burned on an altar, as an offering to God for the sin that had been committed. And if a man offered a sacrifice for sin one day, and then sinned again the next day, another sacrifice had to be offered.
These sacrifices could not keep the people from sinning over and over again, neither could they take away the sins that had already been committed.
"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins." Hebrews 10:44For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. (Hebrews 10:4).
So God in His love for poor sinners gave His only begotten Son to offer Himself up as a sacrifice for sins. Because Jesus was a perfect sacrifice; He needed to be offered only once.
Because He was just,—the holy, sinless One, —He was able to atone for the sins of the unjust.
Dear reader, He suffered for your sins that you might be cleansed and made fit for the presence of God. He bore the punishment you deserved that you might not have to bear it. Have you accepted Him as your sacrifice ? In no other way can you make atonement. No amount of good works will blot out your sins. Through Christ alone, can you approach God.
