A Scripture Alphabet

"L"
Only this morning I awoke from a queer but interesting dream. In my dream I was walking along the street, and saw a medium sized dog very neatly wrapped up in white cloth,— his head as well as his body. He was carrying what appeared to be a bundle of clothes, which he laid by a big cement post at the corner of some one's yard.
After sniffing around for a moment, as if to be sure he had the right place, he started back in the direction from which he had come. He had performed this errand for his master or mistress, promptly, and without turning aside to play with other dogs.
I could not help thinking how often when children are sent on errands, they see interesting things about them, and stop first here, and then there,—sometimes to play, sometimes to watch what someone else is doing.
Now, if their eyes were covered like those of the little dog in the dream, they would not see all these things along the way, and the errand would be run in much less time.
The verse today, "Look not behind thee," is what God said to Lot. Some of you know that Lot lived in a very wicked city, and the Lord destroyed it with fire, because of all the wickedness of the people who lived there. But because Lot was a righteous man and feared God, God told him what He was going to do, so that Lot could get away from the city before it was destroyed. God told him to hurry away to a place of safety, and not to look behind him.
You and I are living in a world full of sin and wickedness, and when we turn to Jesus for salvation, we find a place of safety, for this world too, is going to be destroyed for its wickedness, just as truly as Sodom was. We are journeying heavenward, and when God's destruction comes upon this world, we shall be far away from it, safe with our Saviour.
But as we journey, He does not want us to look behind us. He does not want us to turn to this side and that, attracted by the allurements and temptations of Satan. He wants us to keep our eyes fixed on Him. He would like to have us just as blind to the attractions of this world, as if our eyes were covered like those of the faithful dog.
I trust many of you young readers have learned the preciousness of the Lord, and that He is enough to satisfy your hearts. May you be able to say like the Apostle Paul,
"This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Phil. 3:13, 1413Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13‑14).
"No man having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." Luke 9:6262And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62).
