“THE heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it ? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings." Jer. 17:9, 109The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:9‑10).
It is not pleasant at all to think that the heart, my heart, is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. But that is God's Word, and it must be true.
Many people like to show kindness to their family, relatives, friends, and neighbors, and they feel quite well satisfied with their own goodness.
But the Lord knows what our hearts really are, and He has told us the truth about them. Often the truth hurts. Until you believe this about your own heart, you do not feel your need of a Saviour, neither do you know the wonderful grace of God,—the grace and love that have provided a remedy for this terrible condition.
The most deceitful and wicked heart can be cleansed by the blood of Jesus. When you quit depending on your own useless goodness, and turn to Jesus for salvation, your sins will be forgiven.
But if you go on without God, refusing His remedy for sin, He will reward you according to the doings of your wicked heart. And a terrible reward that will be.
Satan is trying to make you believe you are good enough. Do not listen to him. You are not holy, and without holiness no man shall see the Lord. ( See Hebrews 12:1414Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: (Hebrews 12:14)). Through the blood of Jesus Christ alone can you be made fit for God's presence.
