“Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city." Genesis 19:1414And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. (Genesis 19:14). Nearly four thousand years ago Lot was journeying about from place to place with Abram, his uncle. They started from Ur of the Chaldees, and finally got down to Egypt. Then they went back to the land of Canaan.
Abram, who was later called Abraham, and Lot had many cattle,—so many that there was not room for them to live together longer in the place where they were. The herdman of Abram's cattle got to quarreling with the herdmen of Lot's cattle. So Abram told Lot that it would be better for them to live in separate places, and he gave Lot his choice of the land. Lot chose the plain of Jordan and went down to Sodom to live.
But Sodom was a very wicked city, and some years after Lot went there, God sent angels to tell Lot that He was going to destroy the city because of its great wickedness. They told him to take his sons and his daughters and all his family away before God's judgment fell upon this wicked place.
It was then that Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, "Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city." Sodom is a type of this wicked world, which God is someday going to destroy.
But just as God warned Lot and his family to leave Sodom, so He has warned us to flee from the wrath to come. He has provided for all, a way of escape. Will you make your escape while there is yet time ? Or are you satisfied with this world and its people who know not God?
Mercy's door is still open. You may flee to the Saviour for refuge if you will. But do not wait till some other time. We know not how soon the day of mercy will be over. And when once the door is shut it will be too late.
"O sinner! ere it be too late,
Flee thou to mercy's open gate
And join Christ's waiting band."
