"X"
“EXALT ye the Lord our God." Ps. 99:5.
"Exalt" means to give a high place, and we should give God a high place,—higher than anyone else.
When Herod was king of Judaea he did some very wicked things. He sent John the Baptist to prison, and later had him beheaded there.
Years afterward he killed the Apostle James with the sword, and was planning to kill Peter, but the Lord delivered Peter (See Acts 12).
+One day a little later, he sat on his throne all dressed up in his royal clothes, and made a speech to the people. The people shouted saying, "It is the voice of a god and not of a man." Acts 12:2222And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. (Acts 12:22).
Herod instead of giving God the glory, took it all to himself. Then the angel of God smote him and he died a terrible death.
In Jeremiah 9:23, 2423Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. (Jeremiah 9:23‑24) we read, "Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord."
We are naturally proud of the things we have, and of the things we can do. But all the possessions we have, the Lord has given us. And whatever ability or wisdom we may have has been given to us by God.
So if we have anything to be proud of, or do anything that is praiseworthy, we should give God the glory and the praise. For without Him we could do nothing.
We are so inclined to be proud and boastful,—proud of what we are, proud of what we do, proud of what we have. We need God's help continually that we may exalt Him, at all times, and in all things.
