Those of you who are old enough, and have studied your Bibles, know that the children of Israel were God's chosen people. But their wicked hearts were constantly leading them into sin. They murmured and rebelled against the Lord and worshiped other gods. The Lord had to punish them over and over, yet they continued in their wickedness.
Their prophets told them that the Messiah was coming to be their king; but when Jesus, the Messiah did come, the Jews put Him to death. When He hung on the cross, above His head was written,
"This is Jesus the King of the Jews." They had rejected their king.
Now the Jews and Israelites are scattered over the world. They have no country of their own. But Jesus is coming again to reign over them. Again there will be a temple in Jerusalem, and the hearts of the Jews will be turned to the Lord their King.
Their country, Palestine, which has been barren and unfruitful, "will blossom as the rose." Isa. 35:11The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. (Isaiah 35:1).
"The Lord will rejoice in Jerusalem, and in His people, and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her." Isa. 65:1919And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. (Isaiah 65:19).
In that day they will be very happy for they will obey the Lord, and all will be peace and joy and blessing.
Zion is another name for Jerusalem, and it is when the Jews will have returned to Jerusalem, and Jesus reigns over them, that Zion will hear and be glad, as our verse says.
