104. "Abba," Father--Thus We Call Thee

8,7.

"Abba," Father — thus we call Thee,

(Hallowed name!) from day to day;

’Tis Thy children’s right to know Thee,

None but children "Abba" say.

This high honor we inherit,

Thy free gift, through Jesus’ blood;

God the Spirit, with our spirit,

Witnesseth we’re sons of God.
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” (Romans 8:15-16)
“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:6)
“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” (1 John 5:20)
“I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.” (1 John 2:13)
“Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Galatians 4:7)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” (Romans 8:16)

Abba’s purpose gave us being

When in Christ, in that vast plan,

Abba chose the saints in Jesus

Long before the world began;

Oh what love the Father bore us!

Oh how precious in His sight!

When He gave the church to Jesus!

Jesus, His whole soul’s delight!

Though our nature’s fall in Adam

Seemed to shut us out from God,

Thus it was His counsel brought us

Nearer still, through Jesus’ blood;

For in Him we found redemption,

Grace and glory in the Son;

Oh the height and depth of mercy!

"Christ and we, through grace, are one."
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)
“For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.” (Psalm 108:4)
“The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.” (Psalm 119:64)
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.” (2 Corinthians 1:3)
“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.” (1 Corinthians 12:12)
