Concise Bible Dictionary:
Satan, the adversary, stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel (1 Chron. 21:1; compare 2 Sam. 24:1). He also opposed Joshua the high priest (Zech. 3:1). “Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). In Revelation 12:10 he is also called the accuser of the brethren. It is one of the names or characters of Satan: he is not only the tempter of man, but he is also the positive enemy, the adversary of all, seeking to devour whom he may, and to distress and lead astray those he is not permitted to destroy.
