1. Levitical city of the Kohathites. It was in the lot of Dan (Josh. 21:2424Aijalon with her suburbs, Gath-rimmon with her suburbs; four cities. (Joshua 21:24)); but being a border city it is also connected with Benjamin (1 Chron. 8:1313Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath: (1 Chronicles 8:13)); or with Ephraim (1 Chron. 6:6969And Aijalon with her suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs: (1 Chronicles 6:69)); or with Judah and Benjamin, when Rehoboam fortified the city (2 Chron. 11:1010And Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities. (2 Chronicles 11:10)). It was taken by the Philistines in the reign of Ahaz (2 Chron. 28:1818The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there. (2 Chronicles 28:18)). THE VALLEY OF AJALON is the place where Joshua, when pursuing the Amorites, bade the sun and the moon stand still (Josh. 10:1212Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. (Joshua 10:12)). The city is identified with the modern Yalo, 31° 51' N, 35° 1' E.
