A MESSENGER. In the Old Testament, God Himself (Gen. 16:9, 139And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. (Genesis 16:9)
13And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? (Genesis 16:13)
; Ex. 23:20, 2320Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. (Exodus 23:20)
23For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. (Exodus 23:23)
; Num. 22:32-3532And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me: 33And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive. 34And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again. 35And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. (Numbers 22:32‑35); Judg. 13, etc.) is called an angel. We read of the elect angels and of evil ones (Psa. 58:49). In the New Testament, the word is used of the Lord (Rev. 8:33And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. (Revelation 8:3) and 10:1), of the elect angels, of the messengers of the churches (Rev. 2. and 3.), of a person’s representative when out of the body (Acts 12:1515And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. (Acts 12:15)); also of John the Baptist (Mark 1:22As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. (Mark 1:2)) and other messengers. But it is never used of Christians as such, either now or hereafter, and the notion that we are going to be angels is totally anti-scriptural.
