J.O.N., May 16th H.M.S. “C —,” writes to me. Thank God he has been preserved so far.
“Dear Doctor, — Many things have happened since I last saw you or wrote you. I have been through some fiery trials, but the Lord has brought me safely through... I came here on Tuesday last. I find I am already known as being ‘religious,’ and one man apologized (I think sarcastically) this morning for cursing in my presence. If he would apologize to me, what would he do if he only realized that a Holy God was on the mess deck? But I am thankful to God that I have thus far been read of men. I am quite happy; life is joy when we know that Jesus is ours, and that nothing can separate us from His love. I think it is beautiful to turn to the Bible and read such words as Psalms 121; they comfort me always. As I say, I have been through fiery trials, but, thank God, He has been a wall of fire round about me; He has kept my trembling feet from falling. He has made my heart rejoice in the midst of all surroundings, and He has tuned my heart with songs of praise.” —O/S., J.O.N.
A gold chain and a pebble brooch mounted in silver which were sent me have been sold, and the money obtained has enabled me to get one hundred Testaments for the soldiers. Thank God!
