Concise Bible Dictionary:

The room set apart for sleeping in; being placed in the most retired position it became symbolical of the utmost privacy (2 Kings 6:1212And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. (2 Kings 6:12); Eccl. 10:2020Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter. (Ecclesiastes 10:20)). Joash was hid in a bed-chamber, or a room adapted to that purpose, apparently connected with the temple (2 Kings 11:22But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. (2 Kings 11:2)). Travelers however, in the East, often have to spread their rugs on the floor of the same room in which the members of their host’s family sleep, and the servants they bring with them sleep “anywhere” (2 Sam. 11:99But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. (2 Samuel 11:9)).
