Four Hebrew words are translated “brook.”
4. nachal (Gen. 32:2323And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had. (Genesis 32:23)), a mountain torrent often dry in summer, and thus often disappointing, as in Job 6:1515My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away; (Job 6:15). Such are numerous in Palestine. (This is the word in all the passages where “brook” occurs in the Old Testament except those above enumerated.) The same is called in the New Testament, χείμαρρος, “winter flowing” (John 18:11When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. (John 18:1)). Its Eastern name is wady.
