(hundred). A Roman officer who had command of a hundred soldiers (Matt. 8:5; Mark 15:39; {vi 25197-25206}Luke 7:1-10; Acts 10:1).

An officer over (about) 100 men: they were promoted to this office because of their good conduct and trustworthiness, and it is to be remarked how often centurions are favorably noticed in the Gospels and the Acts ({vi 23351-23359}Matt. 8:5-13; Luke 23:47; {vi 27261;27282}Acts 10:1,22; Acts 27:6, etc.).
