(Genesis 30:37); Ezek. 31:8⁸The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. (Ezekiel 31:8)); the plane-tree is meant.

When the Assyrian is compared to a great tree it is described as excelling in its beauty the branches of the chestnut tree (Ezek. 31:8⁸The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. (Ezekiel 31:8)). It is identified with the “Plane-tree” which grows in Palestine. (Genesis 30:37)). It is the Platanus orientalis. It thrives best in a rich moist soil, and is a noble and beautiful tree.
