(2 Thess. 1:11‑12)
Oh to be but emptier, lowlier,
Mean, unnoticed, and unknown,
And to God a vessel holier,
Filled with Christ, and Christ alone!
Nought of earth to cloud the glory,
Nought of self the light to dim,
Telling forth His wondrous story,
Emptied — to be filled with Him!

   transcendent,
Lo! He does in heaven appear;
Shows the blood of His
   atonement
As thy title to be there.

If some things were omitted
   Or altered as we would,
The whole might be unfitted

I want to give good measure running
   over,
And into angry hearts I want to pour
The answer soft that turneth wrath away,
Because I shall not pass again this way.
I want to give the oil of joy for tears,
The faith to conquer cruel doubts and
   fears;
Beauty for ashes may I give always —

Loosed and brought alone to Jesus,
There’s no safer place to be;
Not rope nor wall nor law can hold
   one
Thy constraining love has freed.
Freed at last to do Thy bidding,
Loosed to live this life for Thee,
Not all the world again can lure me
From captivity to Thee.

The little while! how nearly gone,
   And then my eyes shall see
How God delighted in His Son,
   By all He gives to me;
Yet grace, all other grace above,
   Beyond our hearts to dream —
By giving me He tells that love —
   By giving me to Him.

Let not your countenance be sad,
   For pleasant are His ways.
Rejoice and let your witness show
   Of Christ’s redeeming love,

      know

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psa. 23:1)
I know my Shepherd’s guiding
   hand,
His faithfulness, His tender care,
That all my need He does supply
And all my burdens He does bear.
