While they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them.
This is a very encouraging verse. Perhaps this couple was in the valley of despair - really discouraged. They couldn’t understand why the One whom they thought was their Messiah had died. All their hopes had gone. But the news that morning was that the cave where Jesus had been buried was empty. What could it all mean? Then Jesus comes and walks with them. Their hearts burn as He talks to them and gently explains all the Scriptures that pointed to Himself. Then they recognize Him and He vanishes. But in their great joy they rush back to Jerusalem to tell the news. Communion with Jesus brings joy.
