1JO 3:17¹⁷But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? (1 John 3:17)

Whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

We can question a person’s Christianity by their lack of kindness to others. Turning your back on someone in need indicates the lack of the love of God in your heart - especially if you have plenty and the other has nothing. Our society seems to breed an attitude that I should only have friends who are socially on my level. King David went out of his way to show the kindness of God to crippled Mephibosheth - one who could do nothing for himself. We should do the same.
