A FEW days ago I was walking down a street that was being paved.
It was early evening. The workmen had left, but a watchman was there to keep people and everything else off the newly-laid cement.
I asked the watchman if he had to stay all night.
"Yes", he said, and after a few other remarks he spoke about the nice houses in the neighborhood, wondering what they cost. I told him I thought most of them sold for about $16,000 or $18,000. He said, "I wish I had that much money. Then I wouldn't have to worry about anything."
This man thought rich people were happy, and had no worries. But I told him that those who have much money have plenty of worries,—the care of their wealth, the fear of losing it, and many trials that money cannot prevent nor remove. Disappointments, heart-aches, sickness and death come to the rich as well as to the poor.
"That which brings true happiness," I said to him, "is knowing Jesus Christ as Saviour. Are you a Christian?"
"No," he said, "I am not."
Some further conversation followed as to the death of Christ on the cross, and the way of salvation.
Dear reader, money and earthly blessings cannot give us the joy and peace that are found in knowing Jesus as Saviour.
Naturally we desire the good things of life, but God's Word says,
If the heart is filled with Christ, we will not need to be seeking here and there for happiness, for we will find our joy in Him.
If we have very little of this world's goods, we can trust in the Lord.
The Apostle Paul said,
Dear reader, if you do not yet possess the gift of God,—the gift which is of far more value than money or anything that money can buy, turn to Jesus at once.
Then, knowing Him as Saviour, live for Him, learn of Him, trust Him for the needs of each day.
