The word “vanity” (or “emptiness”) is often used in Ecclesiastes. King Solomon found that this was the result of all that he tried in seeking to satisfy his heart in this world. He also, as directed by the Spirit of God, drew other important conclusions about the world “under the sun.”
Solomon found that two people can withstand an enemy better than one alone. But he concluded that a “threefold” cord is best, for it is not quickly broken. He also found that a man who works will have peace and rest at the end of his day, while the rich spends his nights worrying about his wealth.
As Solomon considered all that men found in this life, he decided that a good name was better than luxurious possessions, that sorrow is better than laughter, for it causes men to be sober, and rebuke, if it come from wise men, is better than singing. Since men have no power to keep hold of their life, the king concluded that only those who fear God can be truly happy.
Solomon’s final warnings in Ecclesiastes are to a young man who, in his youth, is seeking to find joy and has forgotten about a coming day when God will bring him into judgment for his ways. He tells the young person to remember his Creator in the days of his youth. Solomon’s final conclusion is that the whole responsibility of man is to fear and obey God.
