If A Man Does the Best He Can<\/div><\/div>\n\u201cI don\u2019t believe in your doctrine,\u201d said a sailor to a Christian. \u201cMy opinion is that if a man does the best he can, it will be all right with him in the end.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd is that the only way by which a man can get to heaven?\u201d
\n\u201cI believe so, and don\u2019t you think it\u2019s a good way?\u201d
\n\u201cWell, let\u2019s see if it could ever work. How many times have you used profane language since you spoke to me?\u201d
\n\u201cOh well, I have got into the habit of swearing, but I mean to give it up.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd is that the only sin you are guilty of?\u201d

\n\u201cThen you have not done the best you could. If that is the only way of getting to heaven, you have not the slightest chance of ever being there!\u201d
\nThe sailor had no more to say.
\nBut do you expect to be saved by \u201cdoing your best\u201d? This is not God\u2019s way of salvation. What is the use of saying, \u201cIf a man does the best he can,\u201d when God\u2019s Word emphatically tells us that no one has ever done so? God says, \u201cThey are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one\u201d (Psalm 14:3).
\nYou know well that you have done what you should not have done many, many times. You \u201cdon\u2019t pretend to be perfect,\u201d but one sin is enough to condemn you! \u201cWhosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all\u201d (James 2:10).
\nThe \u201cbest\u201d that you can do is to admit that you are a helpless, guilty sinner, unable to do a single good deed to merit God\u2019s forgiveness. When you see yourself as a sinner, you will be anxious to learn what the Lord Jesus Christ did to save you; when you see that everything was fully done by Him, you will stop talking about your \u201cdoing\u201d and rest instead on what He has done.
\nRemember\u2014 \u201cChrist died for our sins\u201d and \u201cthe blood of Jesus Christ His [God\u2019s] Son cleanseth us from all sin\u201d (1 Cor. 15:3; 1 John 1:7).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
