Echoes of Grace: 2020
Fame is not enough. You can win the acclaim of millions, but if you don’t win the approval of the God who is the judge of all, what is the fame worth? Nothing. Are you seeking for fame? It is not enough.
Wealth
Wealth is not enough.
“What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world but lose his own soul?”
(
Mark 8:36
36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36)
). Not a thing.
“The redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth forever”
(
Psalm 49:8
8
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) (Psalm 49:8)
). With wealth you can buy almost anything under the sun (except genuine love and peace of heart), but all the money in the world can’t redeem a soul from eternal death. Wealth is not enough.
Pleasure
Pleasure is not enough. People may enjoy
“the pleasures of sin for a season”
(
Hebrews 11:25
25
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; (Hebrews 11:25)
). But that season is soon over. Then where will those who were
“foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another”
be? They will have gone to their eternal consequences. Pleasure is not enough.
Power
Power is not enough.
“There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it”
(
Ecclesiastes 8:8
8
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it. (Ecclesiastes 8:8)
). There have been many powerful men who were able to move nations, peoples, and multitudes, but when it comes to redeeming their own souls, they were as helpless as babies on the day they were born. Power is not enough.
Beauty
Beauty is not enough.
“Thou makest his [or her] beauty to consume away like a moth”
(
Psalm 39:11
11
When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah. (Psalm 39:11)
). One week in the grave and every vestige of beauty will have disappeared. And the grave is never satisfied. It never lets go of those who fall into it. It is forever saying,
“It is [not] enough”
(
Proverbs 30:15-16
15
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:
16
The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. (Proverbs 30:15‑16)
).
Christ Is Enough
What is enough to satisfy the human heart and deliver it from the death sin so richly deserves? The answer to this question is not a
what
but a
who
. It is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He came from heaven to redeem men from their sins. His perfect, blameless life is enough to fill our hearts with awe, wonder and love. By His death on the cross, He made the way for every man, woman and child to be forgiven and to receive an inheritance in heaven.
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this Man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins”
(
Acts 13:38
38
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: (Acts 13:38)
).
Christ is more than enough!
As sinners we need Him more than we need the air that we breathe and the water we drink. Only in Christ can we find the spiritual food and drink that we so desperately need. The Lord Jesus said,
“I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst”
(
John 6:35
35
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:35)
).
Without Him we are on our way to hell. Without Him we will forever be trying to satisfy our hearts with things that are just not enough. Nothing in this world besides Christ is enough.
Will you turn from your sins and believe on His name so that your faith, hope and love might be in God?
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”
(
John 3:16
16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
).
