We may be assured of this, that the throwing of everything on interpretation is the token, that the power of conscience for the end of nearness to God and obedience to the will of the Father is in a sick and faint and weak state. The love of Christ is superior to knowledge; but such a course, and one so little according to the Lord's mind, gives the superior place to knowledge; and if knowledge do not subserve the end of advancement in grace, we have lost the cross, and it can serve but an earthly end, as it often is of an earthly character, intellectual and high-minded.
