• It presents to us God pondering and speaking in gracious consideration of the race He was about to create thereon, with a mind dwelling on realities about to open out for man far more solemn than the light or the darkness, day or night, literally. Yet the light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart, says the Preacher (Prov. 15:30), and truly is sweet (Eccl. 11:7), as God pronounced it “good”. “And it was evening, and it was morning, first (or, one) day.” Only we must guard against taking the previous darkness as the evening. • God called the light good, but did not say this of the darkness....spiritually darkness is looked upon in Scripture as typical of evil, hence it is not called "good" in Gen. 1:4, as light is (Eph. 5:8; Eph. 5:11; 1 Thess. 5:5). (“Light and Darkness: Genesis 1:3-4” by A.J. Pollock)
• The great lesson that God would teach us is, that He puts a great distinction between light and darkness in their moral meaning. The Christian should be very definite. He should walk in the light.
