The Choice Gleanings Calendar for June 30, 1995, tells the story of a great flower show in London, England. One of the prizes was taken by a magnificent bloom of geraniums in an old tin can, entered into the competition by a child from a tenement house. Asked how she managed to get such a beautiful flower, the young girl explained that a lady had given her a small shoot. She found an old can in a trash barrel, scraped up dirt from the alley to fill it and planted the shoot. “In the morning,” she said, “I put it in the east window, and in the afternoon I put it in the west window, and, well, sir, I just kept it in the sun.”
