Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known My ways.
God was greatly grieved with His people because they did not know His ways. He had delivered them from Pharaoh and the slavery of Egypt; He had provided food and water for them in the desert; and He had given them the evidence of His presence in the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire. God expected His people to look back and thank Him for the past and trust Him for the future, yet at every new event they seemed to think that God had forsaken them. Let us remember that the ways of God toward His people are always for their good. He delights to bless and is delighted when we have confidence in Him.
