His Mother's Text

Miss Sandes, that great worker for God among soldiers, tells the story of the conversion of a soldier in one of her Irish homes. A lady went into the guard-room to invite men to a gospel service. On leaving she repeated the text: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” With a few kind words she left. The words pierced one soldier’s heart. On “sentry go” that night they brought to him the vision of his dear old mother, sitting in her chair by the fire, with this, her favorite text, hanging on the wall by her side; As he looked at the sky he seemed to see in letters of fire the words, “Your mother’s heart is well nigh broken.” He knew how she prayed and wept over him, her wandering boy. He had never answered her last letter. Next day he was asked to go to hear Major Whittle preach. He went, and the text was: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” When the preaching was over, thoroughly broken down and in “dead earnest,” he went into the inquiry room and was saved. He sent the good news home, and the mother’s heart rejoiced because her prayers were answered. Oh! soldier lads with praying mothers, may their prayers be answered for you. Seek your mother’s Saviour now.
