Momma rabbits must teach their little ones to be very watchful for traps. We know this because we were not able to catch any rabbits with the trap we had carefully set up in our garden. So I decided to try a different way to protect the young bean plants that were growing there and seemed to be a favorite food of the rabbits.
Satan has many different ways to trap us or keep us away from reading the Bible, the “bread of life” that we need every day to feed our souls. Sometimes he just likes to confuse us, and that’s exactly what I ended up trying to do to the rabbits. Here’s what I did:
I saw that the rabbits never ate even a small nibble of the leaves on the turnip plants that we were growing. They must not like the taste of the leaves from those plants, I decided. So each time I pulled up some turnips out of the ground for dinner, I would tear up the turnip leaves and scatter them all around the bean plants. I was hoping that the rabbit’s nose would tell him, Those plants are turnips, and I don’t like them!
Satan might be telling you that the Bible is outdated or boring, or even that it is just a fairy tale. He doesn’t want you to think for a minute that it’s the very best book in the whole world, and that every word of it is true. Satan doesn’t want you to know that the Bible tells the good news of God’s love for every boy and girl and grown-up. Proverbs 30:5 tells us, “Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.” Satan also doesn’t want you to know that God offers every person, young or old, forgiveness of his or her sins. It is through His Son Jesus Christ, “in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7).
The rabbits that visit our garden seem to think that the bean plants are turnip plants, and I’m happy about that. However, the bean plants are really bean plants. And if the rabbits continue to leave them alone and they grow nice, long, string beans, we’ll have many meals of delicious string beans along with our turnips.
It’s okay to fool rabbits, because there are plenty of other plants around for them to eat and stay healthy. But it’s not okay to be fooled by Satan about the Bible, the Word of God. It is only through the Word of God that we sinners can have our sins forgiven and have His promise of someday living with Jesus our Saviour in His home in heaven.
Will you believe the truth the Bible tells us? Or will you continue to let Satan fool you? “The devil ... . was a murderer from the beginning, and [lived] not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he [speaks] a lie, he [speaks] of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). Don’t let him fool you any longer! Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).
MEMORY VERSE: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:6
