Fourth son of Japheth, and father of Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. “From these came the distribution of the isles of the nations” (Gen. 10:2,42The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. (Genesis 10:2)
4And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. (Genesis 10:4)
; 1 Chron. 1:5,75The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. (1 Chronicles 1:5)
7And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. (1 Chronicles 1:7)
). Corresponding to this is Isaiah 66:1919And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. (Isaiah 66:19), where God sends His messengers to Javan, to the isles afar off, where His glory shall be made known. In Daniel 8:2121And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. (Daniel 8:21), where the Hebrew is the same, Alexander the Great is king of Javan, agreeing with Daniel 10:2020Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. (Daniel 10:20); Daniel 11:22And now will I show thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. (Daniel 11:2) and Zechariah 9:1313When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man. (Zechariah 9:13) that Javan refers to Greece. In Ezekiel 27:1313Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market. (Ezekiel 27:13) the Javan that traded with Tyre doubtless also refers to Greece; but in Ezekiel 27:1919Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market. (Ezekiel 27:19) it is supposed to point to southern Arabia, the verse being better translated “Vedan and Javan of Uzal traded in thy markets.”
