1 Peter 2:21
O! how sweet to trace the footsteps
Of the blessed Saviour God,
As in holiness and patience
He the thorny life-path trod.
How we love to think of Jesus
Seated on the mountain brow,
Walking by the quiet seashore
Just the same as we do now!
Dwelling in the crowded city,
‘Mid the bustle and the strife,
Blessing all who come in contact
With His holy, helpful life.
O! that we who love the Saviour,
Little children, though we be,
Might more perfectly obey Him
As He bids us “Follow Me!”
Our Lord Jesus had this witness
That He welcomed sinful men;
He would have us lead the lost ones
Back to God, as He did then.
From His lips there dropped the precious
Words of wisdom, truth, and grace;
And His hands were filled with blessing,
For this weary, human race.
Lovingly He touched the mourners,
“Weep not,” tenderly He said;
Thus it is for us to comfort
Those who sorrow o’er their dead.
Like to Him, we mingle daily,
With the sinful, and the sad;
All around us, as around Him,
Move the tearful and the glad.
He has left us an example,
O! that we might follow true,
So that He may find us always
Doing what He’d have us do.
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (2 Cor. 1:3-4).
