The “sparing” of
Malachi 3:17

And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. (Malachi 3:17)
refers to the coming scenes of judgment of which the last chapter treats—-chapter 3:1 and 3. Then shall the Lord appear for Israel’s blessing as the Sun of righteousness; for the church there is an earlier appearing as the Morning Star, herald of the morning (
2 Peter 1:19

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: (2 Peter 1:19)

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. (Revelation 22:16)

Between these two events one, like John the Baptist in the spirit of Elijah, will be used to bring about for God the accomplishment of
verses 5-6
, a work for which the Baptist labored with small result, being rejected and cut off as was his Master, four hundred years after Malachi closed his prophecy (See
John 1:21

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. (John 1:21)

And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. (Matthew 17:10‑12)
