The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians: The Mystery — Christ in You the Hope of Glory
The circumstance which brought forth the epistle to the Colossians was the emergence of a number of false doctrines emanating from Greek philosophy, heterodox Judaism, and Oriental mysticism. These errors were the beginning of what would later become known as Gnosticism. This false line of teaching attempts to explain the existence of God, the creation, the origin of evil, ect., apart from the divine revelation of the Scriptures, professing to be of a higher revelation than that which the apostles had delivered to the saints. The worst of these errors was the denial of the deity and the true humanity of Christ. This blasphemy threatened to take the saints away from the truth of Christ’s Person and work, and needed to be refuted. This epistle is useful today for rebuking philosophical ideas and mystical notions that people sometimes have in connection with divine subjects. However, it has a more important purpose for being in the canon of Scripture; it is one of just two epistles that disclose the truth of “the Mystery”— the highest of all truth. The Mystery is alluded to in Romans 16:25; 1 Corinthians 2:7; 4:1 and 1 Timothy 3:9, but it is only developed in Ephesians and Colossians. Since the truth of the Mystery—in which are “all the treasures of wisdom and of knowledge” (Col. 2:2-3—J.N. Darby Trans.)—has been fully disclosed in these two epistles, all the truth has been delivered to the saints (Jude 3). There is, therefore, no need for anyone to go beyond the Mystery in search of more truth. Understanding this will deliver Christians from turning aside after strange and novel ideas of which we have been forewarned will arise in the last days (1 Tim. 4:1; 2 Tim. 4:3-4).

If we want to know the truth about any moral and spiritual subject, we must go to the Bible, the Word of God. Today, many are denying that there is any absolute truth, and are trying to say that everything is relative. That is, they are saying that it all depends on the circumstances, and that what is right in one situation may not be right in another situation.

But we can depend on God’s Word for the whole truth, and in our second verse today we read that the truth sanctifies us, or sets us apart, from this world. However, there is a price tag attached to the truth. It will cost us time and effort to read, meditate upon, and live in the good of, the truth of God. It takes time to read the Bible, and when we put it into practice in our lives, we will face opposition from this world.

However, it is well worth the price, for having the truth of God enables us to walk through this world with confidence that in the pathway of the truth, all God’s power is behind us. We are able to look at every situation in this world through the eyes of God’s Word. We can understand what God is doing, and this will give us peace in a very troubled world.

“If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you” (1 Peter 4:14).
“And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him (Stephen), saw his face as it had been the face of an angel” (Acts 6:15).
Persecution is never a nice thing to experience, and none of us likes to suffer reproach, which means that others disapprove of us, or are critical of us. We all like to feel accepted by others. However, as Christians we know that we are going to suffer reproach in this world, for we follow a rejected Christ. If He was rejected, we will be rejected too, if we are faithful to Him. But here in our first verse today it says that if we are reproached for the name of Christ, we will be happy. When those in the Jewish council looked at Stephen, whom they were about to murder for His testimony of Christ, his face looked like the face of an angel. How could this be?
If we are reproached for doing something wrong, we are ashamed of ourselves, and we hang our heads. This is right, for we should not be doing wrong things. But when we are reproached for the name of Christ, we are doing the right thing, and being criticized for it. Then the Lord gives us a special joy from the Spirit of God that dwells in every believer. The “Spirit of glory,” which is the “Spirit of God,” is in every true believer, and when we honor the Lord Jesus in this world, He gives us joy, and it shows on our face.
We should never be afraid to stand up for the Lord Jesus, and to speak well of Him. It takes courage, but the Lord will give us the courage, if we ask Him. Then the Spirit of God will give us joy, even though we may be criticized and made fun of. The Spirit of God delights to hear the name of the Lord Jesus honored in this world.

“For a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations” (1 Peter 1:6).
Many different kinds of testing and trials come to the Christian. It may be misunderstanding or ridicule or scorn; it may be sickness, poverty or peril. But God in grace permits these things and tempers them. And He sends them only “if need be.” “Though He cause grief, yet will He have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. For He doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.” He seeks to help us, not to hurt us. “No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Thus God desires “that no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.” Moreover, “our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” And in every trial, He says to us that “My grace is sufficient for thee.”
To him who would honor and please the Lord,
Afflictions and testings shall surely come,
But He weighs the load before He gives it;
His grace abundant ever leads toward home.
